Westwood Works 1903-2003

Where to find more Information

A wealth of other material and memorabilia exists on the history of the constituent parts of the Baker Perkins Group, its subsidiary companies around the world, its growth and its products. The material is stored in several different places but access is possible by appointment as set out below.

A first stop should be the companion website to this, The Baker Perkins Historical Society - for a highly detailed history of the 130 plus companies which formed the Baker Perkins Group.

The definitive history of the Company is contained in Augustus Muir's book "The History of Baker Perkins", published in 1968 by W. Heffer & Sons, Cambridge. This is a full account of the Founders of the Company and its growth from small beginnings in London to the £ multi-million international group of the late 60's. Developments beyond this date are less thoroughly documented but can be found in copies of the Group Newspapers "Group News" and "Contact". Augustus Muir's book is now out of print but copies exist in Peterborough Museum and Peterborough Central Lending Library. A few copies are available on loan from Baker Perkins, Paston (Contact Gabrielle Abbott on 01733 283000). It may be possible to find a second-hand copy on Amazon.com.

A large collection of photographs and negatives of people, company activities and products are currently stored at Peterborough Museum, together with other artefacts and memorabilia. This material can be viewed by appointment by contacting the Museum on 01733 343329 or click here to e-mail.

More material can be found in the new Baker Perkins Archive being set up by the Archives Services of Peterborough Central Library. Contact Anna Sexton or Elisabeth Kingston on 01733 864280 or click here to e-mail. It is necessary to arrange an appointment to search the archives.

Baker Perkins Works Committee Meeting Minutes from 1942 to 1947 are held in the Northamptonshire Record Office, Wootton Hall Park, Northampton NN4 8BP. Telephone: 01604 762129.

A small amount of archive material – primarily duplicates of some of the material stored in the Museum and Library – is retained at Baker Perkins, Paston (Contact Gabrielle Abbott on 01733 283000).

Some Company publicity films and videos are held in The East Anglian Film Archive, University of East Anglia, Norwich NR4 7TJ. These films were produced by the Baker Perkins Publicity Department Film Unit and some, originally produced in cine format, have been converted to video and are available for purchase. Contact should be made directly with the Film Archive in Norwich.

The Science Museum, Exhibition Road, London SW7 2DD, has a large collection of Baker Perkins memorabilia – photographs, financial records, product brochures and other technical material, parts of machines, medals awarded to the company, portraits, etc. Contacts are: G.P. Fitzgerald (Assistant Curator, Engineering technology) and Ms Angela Murphy (Science and Society Picture Library) on +44 0870 870 4868 or visit their website.

The Science Museum tells us that Mr F.C. Ihlee of Paston Hall, Peterborough, one time Managing Director of Werner Pfleiderer & Perkins, later a Director of Baker Perkins, was one of the greatest personal benefactors to the Museum's Water Transport Collection. He bequeathed some 40 models to the Science Museum when he died in 1938, mainly Navy Board models.
